How do I get a duplicate title in Virginia?

Instructions on obtaining a duplicate Virginia (VA) title

Virginia utilizes electronic titles. If your title is electronic, you will need to obtain a physical copy prior to pickup.

If the vehicle was last titled in Virginia

  1. Download and fill out the Virginia Duplicate Title Application

  2. Submit the application

    • Online at the Department of Motor Vehicles

      • Time frame: 5 weeks

      • Cost to obtain: $15

    • In person at the Department of Motor Vehicles

      • Time frame: Same day

      • Cost to obtain $15

    • By mailing the application to:

      Virginia DMV
      Titling Department
      P.O. Box 27412
      Richmond, VA 23269

      • Time frame: 5 weeks

      • Cost to obtain: $15

If the vehicle was last titled outside of Virginia

The registered titled owner(s) of the vehicle must apply for a duplicate title through the state in which the vehicle was last titled.
