Instructions on obtaining a duplicate North Carolina (NC) title

Getting a duplicate title when the vehicle was last titled in North Carolina

The registered owner of the vehicle must follow these steps:

1. Download and fill out the North Carolina Duplicate Title Application

2. You can do one of the following options:

Bring the application to the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Time frame to get the title: All title applications must age 15 business days
Cost to obtain: $20

Mail the application to the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Getting a duplicate title when the vehicle was last titled outside of North Carolina

The registered owner of the vehicle must apply for a duplicate title through the state in which the vehicle was last titled in.
